The Great Commission of Jesus Christ, found in Matthew 28:18-20, calls all believers to "make disciples."  In light of this, the very first question that must be answered before we can engage in the mission to which Christ has called us is, "What's a disciple?"

A disciple is a world-visionary, world-impacting, radically committed, learner/follower of Jesus Christ who will reproduce these characteristics in others.

This list of characteristics is not exhaustive, but it is essential.  The following will provide further information on each characteristic.

World-Visionary

Jesus died upon the cross to make a way for the entire world to be saved. (John 3:16, 1 John 2:2, 2 Peter 3:9).  A disciple of Jesus must share His vision for the world.  Our commitment to the mission shifts greatly when we lift our eyes to the nations for which Jesus died.

World-Impacting

You may be reading this and thinking, "How could I impact the world?" The reality is that through the process of multiplying disciples, your influence on individual lives can spread to the far reaches of the world for the glory of God.

Radically Committed

When we choose to live our lives in line with the teaching of Scripture and follow Jesus by saying, "Yes, Lord" to whatever He asks, there is only one way the world will describe you...RADICAL.

Learner/Follower

You are the disciple of those from whom you learn and whom you follow.  Therefore, "learner/follower" means our lives are committed to learning from and following Jesus Christ.

Reproducer

As we commit ourselves to being disciples of Jesus Christ, we cannot help but share the truth and our lives with others in a way that results in them embracing the call of Jesus on their lives and sharing this with others.

You may recognize deficiencies in your life in one or more areas as you read through these characteristics and their descriptions. Don't be discouraged.  All Christians are on the path of growth as God molds and shapes our lives to be truer reflections of Jesus Christ.  Where you see weakness in your life, pray and ask God to help you grow in those areas. One of the ways God will help you grow as a disciple of Christ is through the process of discipleship.  This process begins with being discipled by a more mature believer and then continues with you making disciples.  For more information on how this process works, follow the links on the right side of this page.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.
